Why your donation matters
Every day, mothers at Pumwani need blood during and after delivery, and newborns in the special care unit sometimes need transfusions. A single donation can help several mothers and babies.
Mothers
Blood is essential for mothers with heavy bleeding after delivery — one of the leading emergencies in maternity care.
Newborns
Small and premature babies in the newborn unit may need carefully matched transfusions to survive and grow.
The community
Hospital blood banks rely on voluntary donors so that safe blood is ready before the emergency happens.
Who can donate?
- Aged 18–65 years and in good health
- Weighing 50 kilograms and above
- Bring your national ID or passport
- Eat and drink water before you donate — and rest after
Where & when
The hospital blood bank sits within our Laboratory & Blood Bank service. Donations are received during laboratory hours, Monday to Friday. Emergency blood is available 24 hours a day through the blood bank for mothers and newborns on the wards.
