Insurance, SHA & Payments
How maternity care is paid for at Pumwani — government-subsidised services, SHA cover, private insurance and safe billing practice.
Most families pay little or nothing
Pumwani Maternity, Childcare & Referral Hospital is a public Level 4 county referral facility. Maternity services are free or subsidised under national and county government programmes, and we accept Social Health Authority (SHA) cover. Specialised items may attract a fee — always confirm at the billing office.
Government-subsidised care
- Free and subsidised maternity services for women across Kenya
- Emergency obstetric and newborn stabilisation regardless of ability to pay
- Referral from a Level 1–3 facility keeps your service category clear
- Ask Reception about waiver support if you cannot pay
SHA & national health cover
- Carry your SHA registration details and an ID at every visit
- The SHA registration desk is at Main Reception and helps with enrolment
- Cover is confirmed before non-emergency procedures
- Ask the billing office to explain what your cover includes
Private insurance & cash
- Private insurers are handled at the billing desk
- Bring your scheme card and, where required, an authorisation letter
- Pay at the hospital cashier only — never to an individual
- Request an itemised receipt for every payment
Four steps from admission to receipt
